![]() ![]() It’s really put a dampener on our big US holiday as the first stop on our trip. From 1985 to 2013, Gold Spike Hotel and Casino was known as an economical destination to stay at in Downtown Las Vegas. There are so many accommodation options in Vegas, you don’t have to do this to yourself. And this wasn’t enough to be let into the building I was staying in…because I didn’t have my passport, which was SAFE IN MY ROOM UPSTAIRS THAT I WASN’T ALLOWED TO ACCESS, where I would always keep my passport whilst on vacation. After walking around the whole building to the nightclub entrance, I gave my name, the full names of all other guests staying in the room, room number, showed my room key, and provided my Australian driver’s license as ID. If you try to access your room through reception with your key/door card, it will let you in, because you ARE a paying guest, but a nightclub security guard will be waiting to turn you away and make you walk around the whole building, even after proving you’re a guest…and how else would you haven be able to get in there without a key? But it gets BETTER. However what I didn’t expect, was finishing up a big day exploring Vegas, to have to wait in a nightclub queue to be able to enter the accomodation that I’d paid for as the nightclub is the only entrance available after reception hours. This hotel is on top of a nightclub and is VERY loud. As you can imagine, the room is very dimly lit. If you still feel like booking a trip to hell and DO stay here, take a power pack as the only power point in the room is in the corner…and you’ll have to unplug the light source of the room, a stand alone lamp, to be able to use it. It is VERY hot in Vegas, a functioning aircon is paramount, and you won’t get that in this hot box, or even a fan. Not that this matters anyway because the electrical prongs on the iron are bent and spark when you try to plug it in. The ironing board cover is dirty and very stained. Rooms are only turned down every three days, so expect a long walk to reception if you need a fresh towel. But the tiny bathroom that floods every time the shower is turned on houses cockroaches, the base of the shower is cracked, the grout is and aged and really dirty, and there is a tile missing on the wall that leaves a lovely mould filled hole to add to the decor. Sure it’s a roof over your head, a bed, and a shower. Unless you have done something truly awful in a past life that you feel you deserve some terrible karma for, do not stay here. We picked this location based on price, and it’s proximity to Fremont Street.
